Classic itinerary: Mexico City + San Miguel de Allende (and Guanajuato)

It's Mexico's most classic cultural itinerary: a few days in the capital — museums, food and neighborhoods — followed by the colonial cities of the Bajío: San Miguel de Allende, repeatedly voted among the world's best cities, and Guanajuato, with its colorful alleys and tunnels. All on good roads, no domestic flights needed.

Stop 1: Mexico City (3–5 nights)

Stay in Roma-Condesa or Polanco and spread out the classics: the Centro Histórico with the Zócalo and National Palace, the National Museum of Anthropology and Chapultepec Castle, Coyoacán with Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul, and a morning at Teotihuacán or on the Xochimilco trajineras. Three nights cover the essentials; five allow a vacation pace and tables at the award-winning restaurants.

Stop 2: San Miguel de Allende (2–3 nights)

By car or executive bus it's about 3.5–4 hours from the capital. The program is the town itself: the pink Parroquia, the Jardín Principal, galleries, sunset rooftops and boutique hotels in colonial mansions. Two days cover the center; a third fits hot springs, wineries or neighboring Dolores Hidalgo.

Stop 3 (optional): Guanajuato (1–2 nights)

About 1.5 hours from San Miguel, Guanajuato is the city of alleys, tunnels and the Callejón del Beso, with the Teatro Juárez and the views from the Pípila monument. It's more vertical and bohemian than San Miguel — a university town, musical, with estudiantina troubadours roaming the streets at night. Short on time, it works as a day trip.

Logistics and tips

Do the CDMX–San Miguel leg by rental car (toll highway) or first-class executive bus — comfortable and frequent. On the way back, travelers leaving from Guanajuato can fly out of Del Bajío airport (BJX) instead of returning to the capital. Remember the altitude — the whole route sits above 1,800 m — and book San Miguel ahead for weekends, when domestic tourism fills the town.

Frequently asked questions

How many days total for CDMX + San Miguel?

The most common format is 7–8 nights: 4–5 in Mexico City and 3 in San Miguel de Allende. With 10 nights you can add Guanajuato and an unhurried day trip to Puebla or Teotihuacán.

Do I need to rent a car?

No — first-class executive buses link CDMX, Querétaro, San Miguel and Guanajuato with airline-level comfort. A car adds freedom for wineries and hot springs, but means facing the capital's traffic on the way out.
