Best time to visit Mexico
Mexico spans Caribbean, Pacific, desert and highlands at 2,000 meters — while it rains in Cancún, Los Cabos can be bone-dry and Mexico City chilly at night. There's no single "best time": there's a best time for each region. This guide sums up climate and seasons so you can pick the right dates.
Mexico's two seasons
Across most of the country, the year splits into a dry season (November to April) and a rainy season (May to October), with showers usually in the late afternoon. High season runs December to April, with price peaks at Christmas, New Year's and Semana Santa (Holy Week) — Mexico's big vacation week.
July and August form a smaller second peak, driven by school holidays in Mexico, the United States and Europe.
Mexican Caribbean: strong sun and hurricane season
Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Holbox and Bacalar are hot year-round with warm sea in any month. The most reliable months are December to April: less rain, less humidity, fewer mosquitoes.
Hurricane season runs June to November, most active between August and October — direct hits are rare, but the odds of rain and rough seas rise. From spring to fall, sargassum seaweed can also appear along parts of the coast; islands like Holbox and Isla Mujeres are usually less affected.
Mexico City and the highlands: mild all year
CDMX, San Miguel de Allende, Puebla and Oaxaca sit between 1,500 and 2,300 meters: mild days and cool nights year-round, never beach-hot. From May to October it rains almost daily in the late afternoon — mornings stay good for sightseeing.
November to April is the driest, sunniest stretch. Día de Muertos (late October to early November) packs CDMX and Oaxaca — spectacular, but it demands booking months ahead.
The Pacific and Los Cabos
Puerto Vallarta and the Riviera Nayarit have a dry, perfect winter (November to April) and a hot, humid, rainy summer. Los Cabos, in the Baja California desert, is dry nearly all year, with strong heat from July to September.
Winter bonus: from December to March, humpback whales visit Vallarta and Los Cabos — the best whale-watching window on the entire Pacific coast.
The short answer
For the Caribbean and Pacific, aim for December to April. For CDMX and the colonial cities, October to May is ideal, but they work year-round. For the best value, travel in May-June or September-November (outside Semana Santa and holidays), when hotels drop their rates — accepting some summer rain in the Caribbean.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest month to visit Mexico?
September and October usually bring the lowest Caribbean rates (peak hurricane season), and May-June is the value window with still-good weather. Avoid December-January, Semana Santa and July-August, the price peaks.
Does hurricane season ruin a Cancún trip?
No — direct hits are rare, and most days from June to November are sunny with passing showers. The higher risk sits between August and October; if traveling then, consider a flexible or refundable rate.
